What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese-based touch therapy that promotes relaxation and stress release. Many people use Reiki for wellness. Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness, but it may assist the body in creating an environment to facilitate healing.

During a Reiki session the practitioner will lightly place her hands on several positions along the client’s body. The practitioner’s hands direct energy through the chakras or energy centers. This energy movement will help to center and balance the client’s energy which invokes deep relaxation and helps the body to release stress and pain.  During your session, you might notice sensations such as heat, coolness, tingling, heavy limbs, dreaming, increased body awareness, or sleep.

What is Myofascial Cupping Therapy?

Myofascial cupping targets the fascia which is a fibrous material that surrounds the muscles and organs.  Adhesions in this layer of tissue can restrict movement and cause pain.

During myofascial cupping treatment gliding suction cups are gently moved across the skin along fascia planes.  The superficial muscle layer is drawn up into the cup, which stimulates the circulation of blood, breaks up adhesions, and creates a pathway for toxins to be drawn out of the body through the lymphatic system. A treatment with cupping will feel like suction is pulling away tension and pressure from tight and painful areas of the body. Afterwards it feels like you have just received a deep tissue massage.

Benefits may include:

  • Relaxation

  • Rehydration of the tissue

  • Increased range of motion

  • breaks up adhesions, and promotes healing in scar tissue and chronic injury sites

  • Increases lymphatic drainage & promotes circulation

You may benefit from myofascial release if you have:

  • chronic muscle tightness

  • muscle tension or pain that only finds temporary relief

  • tension headaches

  • decreased muscle recovery after exercise

How Often Should I Get A Massage?

Massage is a cumulative treatment and therefore should be received on a consistent basis for the best results.  Once every 4-6 weeks is sufficient for some clients based on their stress levels and amount of daily activity.  Other clients are recovering from injuries or require more treatments over a shorter duration to achieve the highest benefit from their massage treatments. Massage combined with other therapies such as acupuncture, physiotherapy or chiropractic care will have an impact on the amount of massage therapy required.

Is it common to experience emotions?

You might be having a day filled with emotions: sadness, joy or exhaustion. Sometimes the safe touch and relaxing environment of a session may bring up memories and help to release feelings. The body can react by crying, laughing, or even shivering from cold. The therapist will simply ask if you are okay to continue receiving the treatment.

Is it okay to talk?

Yes, it is okay to talk, but you may get more benefits from a relaxation massage if you let go of your everyday worries or concerns.

Although some people prefer to talk throughout the massage, don’t feel like you have to make conversation. Feel free to close your eyes and relax, which is what most people do.

Be sure to speak up if:

  • You are uncomfortable with the massage, the techniques being used, the part of your body being worked or the amount of pressure being applied

  • You experience pain

  • You have any questions related to the massage

  • There’s anything you forgot to mention during the consultation

  • The temperature of the room is too cold or hot

  • You would like different music

What if I am embarrassed about my body?

Remember that massage therapists are professionals who are sensitive to possible client issues with touch and are non-judgmental about your body weight, amount of hair, skin conditions, scars, disabilities, medical conditions, or personal history of trauma.

Am I supposed to take off my underwear?

A massage treatment is best performed without the restriction of clothing but you should always undress to the level of your comfort for a massage.

If your problem areas are your lower back, hips, buttocks, or groin, tight-fitting underwear can sometimes get in the way of massage work, but a thong for women or briefs for men should do the trick.

Only the area being massaged will be uncovered.
