1) What is the difference between a Homeopath and a Naturopathic Physician?
A Homeopath is a practitioner who has been trained in Classical Homeopathy but has not attended a Naturopathic Medical School. Naturopathic Doctors use Homeopathy as one of the many natural modalities under the broad umbrella of Naturopathic Medicine to treat the person in their care.
2) What is the difference between a Naturopath and a Naturopathic Physician?
Naturopathic Physicians have attended an accredited Naturopathic Medical school and may choose to call themselves Naturopaths, Naturopathic Physicians, Naturopathic Practitioners or Naturopathic Doctors. Some practitioners who call themselves “naturopaths” have not attended an accredited Naturopathic Medical institution, and are not trained in primary care, and have not gone through the rigorous board certification and licensing process, but have an interest in the philosophy of natural healing. It is in the best interest of the patient to thoroughly check the qualifications of their chosen practitioner. The “links” section of this site provides information on accredited institutions and regulatory bodies.
3) Are Naturopathic Doctors against conventional medical drugs and treatments?
No. Most Naturopathic Physicians, ultimately care most about the health of their patients, and strive to provide those in their care with education about standard and alternative treatment options. Most Naturopathic Doctors believe in the spirit of co-operative care, and place a high regard on the best, least invasive treatment options to help their patients. It does not exclude any treatment categorically because it is not natural, but strives to suggest the most effective treatment with the least adverse effects on the body.
Naturopathic Medicine can be a powerful tool on its own, but also certainly serves its patients well, as a complementary treatment alongside conventional medical care, chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, massage, and many other therapeutic methods.
4) What conditions do Naturopathic Doctors treat?
Naturopathic physicians are trained, primary-care physicians and can treat, or at least provide supportive care for most things, from the common cold to chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, HIV and cancers. Most everyone can benefit from Naturopathic care.
5) Are Naturopathic services covered by Alberta Healthcare?
Currently in Alberta, many extended health plans do cover Naturopathic care. Each plan is unique, so please check with your insurance providers, and we would be happy to provide our patients with receipts for re-imbursement.
